Read a book in a week or less. Read at least two books this month.
That will be twice as many as I read last month.
It is an attainable goal.
This weekend I finally had a chance to replace my (stolen) library card from summer. All my cash was spent at the previous stop-- wait for it-- the cleaners, and this library doesn't take credit cards. I didn't have enough pocket change to pay for the new card, but the clerk said I could take my replacement card now and pay next time, which was a pleasant surprise.
I stopped at the reference desk and inquired if the book, Nickel and Dimed, was available. The library's two copies had already been checked out. An extra copy will be sent to the branch so I can check it out by next weekend. This works out nicely because I have another book (a YA novel) to read while I'm waiting. Also, I found out that they take magazine donations. I have a few dozen that would be better off donated than chucked into the recycle bin.
Civilization is sheer vanity and the vain are never happy.
I finished my nanowrimo novel around 8:45 tonight, and I'm a little wired, but I feel like a lump, a bump on a log, what have you. All I've managed to do since I finished was to order in food. Way to lift that phone! Go me!
Writing this year's story was a real effort because I did it completely on my own computer and my own time; never during my day job's work hours. Not really during the weekends either which came to bite me in the butt toward the end. Taking charge of setting aside my own time to write was a new challenge, but this is probably good for a whole other post.
For every person who attempted to write a novel during National Novel Writing Month, I am happy to have shared the experience with you. For the buddies who have added me to your nano list from Vox, I want you to know you all rock regardless of how much you managed to write this month. I was watching all your bars progress throughout the month and rooting for you, even if I didn't actually get around to sending you nanomail saying as much. Come midnight I too will be able to answer the question 'Am I glad it's over?' Until then, I have to remember to pick my excerpt passage and finalize my word count before it gets stuck that way at midnight. Each year, without fail, there has been some glaring typo in my excerpt that I could no longer edit in December. This drove me nuts for the past four years, and I'm pretty sure it'll happen again this time. But I think I'll be okay with that.
Each person has a reason they take on the NaNoWriMo challenge. For me, I just needed to remind myself that I can meet deadlines for my own projects. If I can consistently do this, just for myself, then I know I can meet deadlines for other people, especially when people offer to pay me for my creative efforts and/or time. Being able to over deliver is a valuable skill.
Plus, this is the perfect type of challenge to give my writing muscles a sorely needed work out, while at the same time, finding some really cool new music to become obsessed with. My favorite new band, discovered by way of John Mayer's blog, is Paramore and the song I am currently obsessed with is "Crush Crush Crush" (<--lyrics)
Check out Paramore (<--their myspace) when you get a chance
Their entire album, RIOT, is streaming from that site. "Crush Crush Crush" is the first to automatically play.
Oh hey, the food has just arrived and there's a Bollywood/ Hollywood DVD all ready to watch until I fall asleep.
Shush! I actually like those movies (judging from the few I've seen). See you around, November!
NaNoWriMo site alias: kwas
Nano genre: Most likely young adult/ youth fiction.
Previous attempts: 4
Previous wins: 4
Completed Nano "official first drafts": 0. I tend to not delve too much into them for actual editing after November, but I do re-read a couple from time to time. I'm working on making at least one novel ready for OPE (other people's eyes).
Will you post one of your old stories online? They're all in the NOPE (no other people's eyes) stage right now.
Current character count: None yet.
Plot: No.
Does having no plot before November present a problem? No
Really? Really. I've tried writing novels both ways and find that I prefer to not plan it all out beforehand. It's more fun for me that way.
Stress level: low
Excitement level: high
Days 'til Nano begins: two
Fuel: Healthy carbs and lots of veggies. No use making myself sick on junk, taking myself out of the running for a few days to recover from the self-sabotage. Don't worry, I'll be sure to throw some pizza and a ridiculous amount of popcorn down my throat, and maybe some ice cream too. For balance.
Caffeine limit: 5/week, max
Planned writing days: 24/30 days
Music: Lots of stuff on iTunes and Pandora radio
Average writing speed: ~1K words/hour
Secret writing weapon: Word sprints (a.k.a. word wars)
Average writing sprint speed: ~2K+ words/hour
Weakness: procrastination
Seeking fellow NaNo-ists: Yes! If you comment with your forum alias I'll add you to my buddy list.
*whispers* Jumanji.
While handling a bag of dry cleaning this evening, I managed to, without the aid of a stapler, staple my middle finger to the bag by puncturing my skin approximately one cm from the tip of my middle finger. The staple went through any guitar callous I had, and back out again and in my knee-jerk reaction I managed to close it (you know, the way it looks when stapled to something normal). It was not painful until I pulled it out. I pulled it out because after I told my mother what happened and she saw her daughter stapled to a bag of dry cleaning, she wanted to a) go grab a knife to open the staple, and b) put rubbing alcohol on my stapled finger to "kill the germs." *cue scream of terror*
So I decided to get over my fear of removing sharp metal objects accidentally inserted into my skin, and take matters out of my own hand before she returned, opting to risk tetanus and whatever other germs were hanging out on the staple. I do hope the ice and makeshift paper towel bandage wrap will stop me from dying at some point during the night.
Typing this entry sucks. I've hit backspace 100 times already. And I did not reach my word goal for today. :(
In other news, I finally received my books from Amazon, two months after ordering them. If I can't type for the next day or so, at least I'll have something interesting to read.
What would the title of your autobiography be?
Submitted by princesskasren.
The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman Madeline Wright
I know it's not original, but it gets the job done. I have enough trouble these days thinking up a good name for my new fictional novel for NaNoWriMo. I have enough trouble writing my new fiction novel for NaNoWriMo. If only I was able to live to 110, like Miss Jane Pittman, I would definitely be able to resolve both of those issues, because I'd have enough trouble being incredibly old.
Ok, here we go. I just thought of a title. Madeline Wright for Dummies.
No? Ok. Maybe you're right. What about Madeline Wright for Strangers.
Do you like it? I like it. Except after reading it over about three times it sounds like I'm all pro-stranger. Hello there, stranger. I'm all about strangers. Please, buy my book. *cheesy grin*
