It's been a pleasure hosting Mikey Mondays, an open mic night event for the Santa Monica community. Due to circumstances beyond our control, it is with regret that I announce that all future Mikey Mondays at It's A Grind Coffeehouse, Santa Monica, are canceled, as the cozy coffeehouse on the corner of 6th street and Santa Monica Blvd. has been forced to go out of business.
Thank you to all who participated and showed your support over the last two months and of course, a big thanks to It's A Grind Coffeehouse who encouraged music and community in their Santa Monica neighborhood! You can still add myspace.com/itsagrindsantamonica to your friends and keep in touch with people you may have met here. Also visit openmikes.org to find other open mics, no matter where you are in North America.

Calling all open mic aficionados, musically inclined locals, and visitors! It's A Grind Coffeehouse in Santa Monica is debuting their very own open mic night and you are invited to come participate!
If you plan to play get there by 7PM! Our show will begin at 7PM and go 'til 9PM.

How much does this cost?
It's free (along with free nearby street parking after 6pm). There will be plenty of light food and tasty beverages for purchase.
Never done this before?
Neither have we. It's our very first open mic night here too. Let's make history together! Newbies are welcome here. This is a perfect venue to make your debut in a positive and supportive music community.
Early weeknight bonus!
Advantage of a Monday open mic is that you've got plenty of nights left in the week to head to other music hot spots in LA, Santa Monica, Hollywood, or the valley.
Feel free to pass this message along to anyone you think may be interested. See you Monday!
Josh Groban (Josh Groban), Idina Menzel (Elphaba from "Wicked" via B-way), Kerry Ellis (Elphaba in "Wicked" via London production) and Adam Pascal (Roger from "Rent", via B-way and the movie) in the same show!
If this ever comes to America, I would very likely make a point to travel to New York to see it.
Anyway, with my current system there shouldn't ever be too long of a wait between new songs, unless I just stop writing for the next ten months. And I won't do that right now because... well, this is February Album Writing Month (FAWM)!
You might recognize the voice of Lisa Lobsinger, a lead singer at one point in Broken Social Scene (see wikipedia). Since I'd never heard BSS songs before today I did not. But it's okay, l like RSR a whole lot more.
They capture the essence of a feel-good, electronic pop sound with lyrics that make you eager to hear the next line in most, if not all, of their songs. I know RSR have been around for a few years and may be on a hiatus at the moment, but I only discovered them yesterday. *hides late freight ticket stub*
It was this song, Rip the Universe, on an opening music cue of The Best Years on the-n.com's The Click that made my ears perk up. Luckily I was able to catch the end credits to see exactly who was singing.
If you like that song included in this post, you can hear more on the following sites.

Here are lyrics to selected songs (including Rip the Universe).
The Best Years is not yet airing on TV but will in couple of weeks (starting Friday, June 29th on The N). If you watch it listen out for this song in the first minute or two of the premiere.
The series is about the life of an orphan, Samantha Best, from a foster home upbringing, matriculating with a full scholarship to a fictional Ivy League university in Boston. Think of it as a Wonder Years (sans narration) meets Popular (sans the excessive camp). Also, I always get a kick out of shows pretending to take place in the US, but being clearly Canadian.
The music of RSR has also been featured on Radio-Free Roscoe, another show on The N with inexplicably addictive music.
It's almost time to say goodbye to The Show with Ze Frank. I'm a little sad that his year-long "internship" is coming to an end (March 17, 2007) but I'm glad I've been subscribed to the podcast over the last year. It's been a nice daily 3-5 minutes of my workday that I've been especially able to enjoy, especially Fridays, A.k.a. Ride the Fire Eagle Danger Day.
Today he performs with a guitar(+ist) due to a bet that he lost (but we all win).
Happy Friday Ride the Fire Eagle Danger Day.
Do focus on music
I'm reading ten to twenty pages per day in this book:
I should be done in a month. I'll post a short review of it as I did for this one:
I am disappointed that I didn't get advanced tickets to The Hotel Cafe Tour within the four hour window of me seeing the e-mailed newsletter from one of my favorite bands, The Weepies, and me arriving home after work to actually buy them. That night is now hopelessly sold out. This sucks, especially because The Weepies pretty much only tour the midwest/ east coast of the US. Except for the one night on the 18th of this month. Why'd I have stop and get gas and then decide to go to the grocery store, since I was already out and about, for that stupid carton of milk? That's what I get for trying to be efficient. :P
1. I know from experience that The Hotel Cafe doesn't sell normally advanced tickets except in rare cases. This was one.
2. I know I can be pretty quick with a mouse and keyboard, so if it was a matter of getting something before it sold out then I normally would have been able to do it if I hadn't so been complacent about #1.
Who knew? Totally my fault. I just wasn't prepared. Fool me once, shame on you. SHAME on you Hotel Cafe!
Note: I'm not really that upset about it. Just poking fun at myself.
Anywho, I'll be playing a show of my own tomorrow evening, at Unurban Coffeehouse. My show is free so there won't be any of that sold out funny business to deal with should one wish to attend. Check my music site for more info.
